spring words

Dear readers,

We have approached that coming-of-age moment in every blog's life. No, not the own-domain-name or the redesign. Not the adding contributors (way past that, shoutout to Boomerang Thursday!) or the hooking up with social media (we went a little crazy, like every adolescent blog, but settled down comfortably with fb and twitter!). Nope. What we're talking about is extended-blog-break.

After much angst, we've decided to celebrate our eighteen-month (can you believe it?) anniversary with a little blog vacation. We have some important real-life things to conquer in the next month, and that's where we'll be. Of course, we'll be noticing and gabbing about things under twenty bucks the whole time!

We're going to miss you! We'll be back with more great bargains.

Happy summer, recessionistas,
S + N

Monday Words.

Sometimes we have Monday words,

We have Monday words when our weekend has been too busy to think or write or plan or blog.

We have Monday words when we were at weddings or just the laziest people ever trying to catch up on sleep and Battlestar Galactica (Don't judge).

We have Monday words when we need to tell our readers to keep reading! We have an awesome guest blogger tomorrow and Thursday, and we'll feature some bonus under $20 items to make up for our behindness.

Xo,

N + S

Man, 2010 has not heralded great punctuality and discipline on our parts, hm, readers? We still love ya, and we definitely still love things under twenty bucks, we promise.

Would you believe I got on four flights and one nine-hour car ride this weekend en route to a swanky conference in Southern California and then to a bachelorette party in Las Vegas? Yes, I did, and it was kind of great. I had an unexpectedly lovely time with an old friend, and learned that bachelorette parties in Vegas are actually just as great as they sound. Huge congratulations to my friend E!

And this is ridiculous, but I have no idea what N did this weekend! Crazy. Luckily N+S reunion 4.0 (2010 has been a great year for our reunions) commences next weekend.

Can I wish you all friends and food and bargains for the week?

Sorry for the delayed weekend words reader,

I'm in a particular ski area this weekend with the guy and his friends. It started off stressful for reasons that don't belong in this post but now is awesome. I'm actually not a skier which meant while everyone was away from the house I proceeded to sit in a hot tub surrounded by falling snow. Amazing.

S is entertaining one of our favorite people and is then hunkering down to do some serious working. Which is good because she's headed for a whirlwind of conferences, bachelorette and engagement parties for the next few weeks.

Readers, tell us about that period where all of a sudden all your friends start getting engaged. I can't describe the feeling in any other words except "Is it that time already?"

Lots of love to the fans (i.e. you!)

Hi Readers,

It's the second month of the year and things are finally starting to feel like 2010. We're back to serious working-like-crazy, we're back to thinking of ways to expand the blog and keep bringing you awesome items under $20, and we're still both trying to juggle everything in our lives.

S is recovering from bronchitis and I'm congested so badly that I seriously feel like my skull is going to explode - but the good news is we're both getting better and are laying low this weekend. The guy's parents were in town last weekend which was a whirlwind of excellence. This weekend I'll be at my parents house, then off to a superbowl party that is sure to be delicious.

S is working and traveling and juggling away - hopefully she's resting a wee bit, alongside her new friend, the excellent dramedy "Castle". Any fans?

We're aggressively looking for guest bloggers to help spice up the site, and we're also looking for feedback on our much more minimalistic site. Get in touch! thesignificantothers (at) gmail (dot) com

Go Colts and Saints, depending on who you're all about this year!

This is so not the point of anything, particularly the weekend, but I was re-watching some old TV, and it's a completely ridiculous statement, and it only works because it's Clark, but it is Clark, and I just love this:
I shave, sir. I have a driver’s license. I’ve won a couple of fist fights. I’ve saved a life. I have lain with woman. I’ve been hustled at pool, I’ve defied my father’s wishes. I have broken hearts and I have been heart broken. So by all the markers of this society I am a grown man. -Dr. Clark Edison, Bones
And we most certainly do not run a link blog to cute children on the internet, but I also love this.

I guess, at the very heart of the internet (or maybe America? who even knows?), what's the point of having your very own blog if you can't put whatever you want on it, eh?

This has been a sad week. Bad things have happened to people. At first I wanted to write, "to good people", but it would not have been less sad if it had been to bad people, and how do you tell who's a bad person? The overarching message of my professional training and personal life has been that it's really easy to mix up "bad people" with "people to whom bad things happen". We were talking the other day about how when bad things happen, it feels like the world should stop and grieve, stop and be grateful, stop and care. But if the world stopped even for just the tragedies of the people I know and know of, the world would be stopped all the time. Isn't that completely overwhelming?

I'm not really one to look to the German, but there's that German word people are always talking about that means sadness about the world's pain. It is sorrow and helplessness turned outward, in a way. We all know I'm a little drama, but this week and this year have been like that a little. Last year, bad things happened too fast to think about the world, and this year is the truth that it's always been like that and always will be like that, but the speed just shifts for individual people.

On that note, friends, we hope for a good week for you, with just a bit of time stopped, some time re-watching old TV, and some time looking at adorable children on the internet.

Hi all,

Well readers, 2010 is crazy. And we both had a moment where we thought - you know what? We can't keep this blog going any longer. But then we realized that we love our blog and we love shopping for things under twenty dollars, so we will continue to post for as long as we can.

Incidentally if you or someone you know would like to become a weekly contributor, let us know! We love having the Boomerang Lady on board with us but would love to expand our team. Get in touch!

What's everyone up to this weekend? We're both hibernating to do work, clean the house, do chores, and reminisce about how we just saw each other last weekend but it seems like ten years ago. Ah the plight of long distance friendship.

Until Monday,
N + S

weekend words

Back here, again.

the missing

the way loss seeps
into neck hollows
and curls at temples
sits between front teeth
cavity
empty and waiting
for mourning to open
the way mourning stays
forever shadowing vision
shaping lives with memory
a drawer won't close
sleep elusive
smile illusive
the only real is grief
forever counting the days
minutes missing without knowing
so that one day
you find yourself
showering tears
missing that love
like sugar
aches teeth

Hi all,

First ww of the year! I sure hope this weekend doesn't reflect the pace of the year. I'm up in N's city for a whirlwind reunion with a college friend, and N is moving in(!!) with the guy this weekend. It's a sad day for us that we're in the same city and barely see each other! Hope 2010 is treating you right!

Since we're not quite able to do this in our real lives, we've decided to take the day off in our blog lives. Fa la la la laaaa la la la la.

For you bargain hunters, check out the huge sales at 6pm, endless, gap & co (40% off a boatload of stuff), express (lots of pretty things 40% off plus $15 gift card for every $60 spent), dsw (boots on sale, free shipping, save me from myself...), and ny&co (literally everything is 50% off... WHAT?).

For you bargain hunters with enough clothes (I know, I know), please, please, please do yourself a favor, click here and become obsessed with a whole new genre of bargain consumption. 20x200 has a crazy beautiful holiday gift guide up. You know what, I wanted you to click so badly I just stopped writing this post and googled how to take a screenshot on my Mac to add visual interest and entice you there to buy prints that I can no longer buy because the surfaces in my apartment are covered with prints. And everything is $20.

N had a big, big week - job, home, life wise - and that girl needs to take a break. I did not have a big, big week, but don't you think for one second that will keep me from taking a break.

Enjoy your weekend, friends, whether you're stuck inside with a blizzard outside or sighing as you reach for yet another t-shirt as your lovely new wool coat is relegated back to the who-am-i-kidding-i-do-not-belong-in-this-climate pile. For those of you who celebrate a holiday next week, try to find a second or two to yourself before the beautiful crazy starts. For those you who don't, why not do the same, except without that second clause and with a bit of relief about that?

weekend words

Hi Readers,

Our N & S Reunion will commence in about 15 hours, which is very exciting. That seems to be all the news I can think of right now.

The guy and I are moving in together - have I mentioned this to our Stuff Under Twenty readers? Tell me how you found your places - I'm looking for a place in the Bay Area, where rent ain't cheap - it's sort of like dating. You're trying to find the right place and you have to be charming and have the right stats and you may love the place and they may not love you. Dumping ensues.

Anyways if you live in the letter shoot us an email if you know of a place and want more details from me about what we're looking for- seriously! We think of you all as one big family and family helps out!

So, the point is we're trying to house hunt in the midst of our schedules. We'll see how things go...

S is crazy busy! I feel like everytime I call her she's getting work done which is pretty incredible given how much I call her. At least holiday season is upon us and that means holiday parties and that means flirting and free drinks. Hopefully she'll get a little bit of a break this weekend. We're off to our favorite bar in the area for long chats and garlic fries.

Until Monday!

Thanksgiving Week: We're on Vacation!

Photo courtesy of m.bibelot's flickr account.

It's the holidays and we're already beat, readers.

We need some R&R and that means a few days off from blogging. In the meantime, enjoy your week, hopefully you all have some time off, whether or not you're celebrating Thanksgiving.

I'm off to spend my first holiday with the guy. Eep! I hope his friends and family like me. Recommendations on what to pack for a Thanksgiving in Chicago with your boyfriend? I'm really asking!

S is resting up from the flu (blah) and work (blah) so I hope she's able to curl up with some books, some old films, and lots of good food. Oh S, how I wish we were spending Thanksgiving as carefree as we were spending it together last year. Such is life. Tide and time, as my mom says, waits for no one.

But wait you say? What about the secret spectacular giveaway?

It's coming....Check back after Thanksgiving to enter our most fabulous prizes yet!

Stay thankful, we're thankful for you, and thanks for helping Stuff Under Twenty make it to a year!

We love you all,

N + S
