GIVEAWAY: stunning photography

This giveaway has ended. Check our front page for more great giveaways!
One of my favorite things is that feeling of being one of the first to discover an artist on etsy. When I came across this print from caterpillars's shop, I had that moment where my breath caught and I literally whispered a tiny "wow". Her photography is so filled with light in so many permutations. The print above makes me want to sit here and stare at my screen until I've memorized how something can be so beautiful.

How unexpectedly fabulous is this photograph from a ferry ride? So bright and clean and crisp. It feels like you're moving into the future, and it's everything you wanted (including 40% off!).

Can you even believe something can be this blue, and this right?

I love how the way the light plays off the flowers in the back to make them seem constructed of perfect little circles, the way you drew them in elementary school, with one circle in the middle and a bunch of circular petals around.

Win a print of your choice from caterpillars's etsy shop. The giveaway runs from 12:00 AM PST today (Monday) until 10:00 PM PST, October 4th (Sunday). The winner will be chosen by random.org and emailed on Monday. If the winner does not respond within 24 hours, a second winner will be chosen. Stuff Under Twenty is not responsible for the giveaway after the winner and the storeowner have been put in contact with each other. This giveaway accepts US and CANADA MAILING ADDRESSES.

weekend words

Hi Readers,

You know what's scary? It's like, October. It's not even like September. It's like October. It's like, almost 2010. It's like finally we'll be back in a decade that people know how to label. Remember when it was 2000 and people were like, what will we call this decade? The auughts? The naughts? The oh-ohs? And we were all like we'll decide later. And WE NEVER DID. We passed TEN YEARS not deciding. We just decided to hang out until something that we know how to name came along. And it's almost here. It just turned the last season it ever will turn in the unnamed decade. From now on, we'll know how to say, the first winter of the Tens! We have three months left in this lost decade, and then we'll be able to have trends we can identify in 10-year chronological segments. Like how the 30s were the Depression and 40s were the War and the 50s were the boom and the 60s were the hippies and the 70s were the War and the 80s were the 80s. It feels almost like we never cohesed an identity because even if we had, how would we have identified it? (Instead, we made up words like cohesed. And tweet. And continued to say "like" like our livelihoods depended on it. Just me on that last one.) I guess we could always go with the War.

So heavy for a ww, huh? I apologize that our usual lightheartedness isn't around, but everything feels a little heavy right now. Have a good, good, good, fall, delicious, living, breathing, cinnamony-spice, cozy sweater, sunglasses, TiVo, old friend, new friend, bbq, dinner party, sunrise, sunset, letters in the mail, gumballs from the machine, pasta, sorbet, live music, on-the-go, sit-and-think, book-smell, breathe-hard, love-hard, fall weekend.

Until Monday,

N + S

Guest Post: Dating Under Twenty

No, this is not a post for the cougars and cradle-robbers! It's my recessionista guide to a fabulous inexpensive date. Whether you're the pursuer or the pursued, it's great to have a date that doesn't break the bank. If you think about it, most dates get really expensive because you start paying for lots of little conveniences--cab rides, fancy meals, tickets to sold-out shows during prime-time, etc. Therefore, a date on the cheap requires some prior planning. Thankfully, I've done most of it for you. So here's an idea on how one $20 bill can create an impressive date in none other than super-expensive New York City:

Supplies Needed: $20 bill, 2 water bottles to stay hydrated, and a sense of adventure!
Constraints: Your date will need to be on a weekday and start at about noon.

Spend two hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: $1 each = $18 left. The suggested ticket price for adults is $20 and $10 for students. In any other circumstance, I would recommend paying the suggested price if you can afford to and are moved to do so. However, this all fits into my $20 date plan, so play along with me. The exhibitions at the Met are not only breathtaking and thought-provoking, they are great conversation starters. Rather than overwhelm yourselves with trying to see too much of the museum, each of you should choose one exhibit you want to experience with your date. You can learn a lot about what interests a person. Is he into Japanese photography? Is she inspired by Oceanic art? Are you both confused about why everyone's so into Impressionistic art? Insider tip: Water in plastic bottles is allowed at the Met. Bring your water bottle with you so you don't end up paying for some while at the museum!

Chicken Festival for a late lunch: 1 shared combo for $10 = $8 left. I have to admit that I have never eaten here, but this is the first place I would head after the museum if I was hungry and on a budget. According to the passionate rating community on Yelp, Chicken Festival's generous portions of succulent chicken, perfectly fried maduros, fluffy saffron rice, and mouth-watering beans are not to be missed. I wish I could dial up some delivery right now! As far as I can tell, they don't even have a website, so you know that means they are peddling pure, unadulterated deliciousness!

Free wine tasting at Best Cellar's $0 = $8 left. The friendly wait staff at this chain of modestly-priced wine shops will shower you with their overwhelming knowledge of their selections and of wine in general. Note that the free wine tastings are daily Mon-Fri from 5-8 pm.

Wrapping it up like a pro by giving your date a parting gift. $6 for a bottle of Vinho Verde = $2 left. Commemorate your wonderful date by surprising your date with a bottle from Best Cellar's. Their vinho verde goes well with a lot of everyday (read: cheap and greasy) foods. Your date will be delighted to have a fun token from the date (or at least something they can re-gift at a later time).

Head home on the Subway $2 = $0 left. During your subway ride home, relish in the lovely date you had today for just a meager $20.

Your date was probably so impressed with the whirlwind of activities, they probably didn't even notice how little money you spent. Whether you're in a relationship or hanging out as friends, fun and adventure don't have to cost a fortune. Onward, recessionistas!

GIVEAWAY: lovely original art!

This Giveaway Has Ended. Check our home page on Monday
for info on our newest giveaway!

I love buying art off etsy as much as the next person (okaaay way more than the next person, exhibit A: my entire apartment), but one thing about buying art from etsy that's discouraging (and really from almost anywhere if you have the kind of budget where a blog like S/20 is appealing to you) is that almost everything affordable is a print. And prints are fabulous (exhibits B-F: my apartment), but there's something extra wonderful about knowing you're the only person in the world who owns a particular bit of art. artwatercolor's shop is little gem of a place on the internet where you can fabulous high quality watercolors and know you're the only one on earth with your one of a kind work of art. The winner of this giveaway has a choice of the stately nude or beautiful homescape. This giveaway accepts worldwide shipping addresses.

This is probably my absolutely favorite original in artwatercolor's shop. I love how the house feels like it has a rainbow living inside it. Bright but muted colors and wonderful lines on the house and the tree behind it make me want to walk right up those steps and ask if I can visit for a bit.

This adorable family of birds just slays me. The shadows and light of the tree branches and nest are absolutely fantastic, and the silhouette-like portraits give the birds an air of stillness and watchfulness. This would be just the thing in a sitting room or reading corner, to get you to that place right between serene and aware.

And here's a rush of color that will startle you awake, somehow in a pleasant, well-rested, and energetic mood. I love that this bouquet doesn't look like a typical bouquet print, that the flowers all seem so alive in their haphazardly arranged way.

The giveaway runs from 4:00 PM PST today (Monday) until 10:00 PM PST, September 27th (Sunday). The winner will be chosen by random.org and emailed on Monday. If the winner does not respond within 24 hours, a second winner will be chosen.
